Energy

Whether your business is in power generation, renewables, oil and gas, nuclear, or emerging technologies, HSE offers organisations in the energy sector the large-scale testing facilities and expertise they need to assess and resolve health and safety issues.

Examples of large scale testing that HSE has carried out for clients in the energy sector include:

  • impact and fire testing of a nuclear materials transportation flask
  • comparative performance testing of fibre-reinforced and metallic pipework for refinery applications
  • fire proof and certification tests for safety critical components

Horizontal Jet Fire

ISO/TR 22899
Horizontal Jet Fire Facility

Independently certified by Lloyd's Register as compliant with design and safety regulations, this purpose-built facility tests the jet fire resistance of PFP materials to BS ISO 22899-1 andBS ISO 22899-2 standards.

It enables standard and bespoke testing of a wide range of samples such as panels, pipe penetration seals, cable transits and cables.

Blast Test

Blast Test Facility

The blast exposure facility is designed to house 1,620mm2 samples used for jet fire resistance testing. This allows samples to be blast tested then jet fire tested without sample modification. It uses ignited flammable gas mixtures to replicate the heat and blast impulse duration to which materials would be subjected in a real-world event.

Bespoke blast testing (within limits) can also be accommodated.

Jet Fire

Pre-Certification Jet Fire Facility

Our unique small-scale jet fire facility offers a quick, low-cost way to conduct product development for PFP materials and screening systems that will later undergo ISO 22899-1 jet fire testing.

The facility recreates heat flux and erosion conditions similar to those experienced during jet fire tests and can run for up to 3 hours per sample.

Vertical Jet Fire

Vertical Jet Fire Facility

Our full scale ISO 22899-1 Vertical Jet Fire rig allows samples of PFP to be subjected to cryogenic spills in situ prior to jet fire testing.

It can also be used for standard or bespoke testing where the sample is orientated horizontally to simulate real-world conditions, e.g. a walkway.

Fluid Dispersion Test Facility

Fluid Dispersion Test Facility

This dedicated facility enables the release of a variety of gases or fluids and allows their dispersion to be measured.

Cryogenic Release Facility

Cryogenic Release/Spill Facility

Our Cryogenic Release Facility provides the ability to perform metered and instantaneous releases of both liquid nitrogen (LN) and liquified natural gas (LNG) for consequence modelling.

Electrostatic Fluid Flow

Electrostatic Fluid Flow Facility

This large-scale facility can be used for measuring electrostatic charge generation on liquids and components (including composites) during fluid flow.

Deflagration and Detonation Arrestor Pipeline

Deflagration and Detonation
Arrestor Pipeline facility

This facility consists of two rigs: an in-line rig and an end-of-line rig, and can be used to investigate and test explosion arrestors and high velocity vents.

Dispersion Facility

Dispersion and Fire Facility

This dedicated facility lends itself to a range of specialist research and testing purposes, such as vapour cloud formation research (including cryogens); warehouse fires research; liquid spray fire testing and microbiological decontamination tests.

300 m3 Multi-purpose Test Chamber

300 m3 Multi-Purpose Test Chamber Facility

Designed to operate at high pressure, this 300m3 test facility is fitted with a measurement and ventilation system and can be filled with water to an approximate depth of 10m.

Combined Cycle Gas Turbine

Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Facility

Clients can use this facility to investigate the performance and safety of combined cycle gas turbine systems (including heat recovery systems) and operation on novel fuels.

Pool of fire

Pool Fire Facilities

Our various Pool Fire test pads and sites can be used to perform pool fire experimentation that enables you to understand the consequences of system or equipment failure, and can also be used for the testing and development of new technologies.

Hazmat and Explosives Testing

Hazardous Materials and Explosives Testing

We possess a suite of facilities and techniques that enable our clients to test, understand and benchmark the properties of explosive and hazardous materials.

Impact Test Pad

Impact Test Pad

For drop tests involving high mass objects, HSE Testing and monitoring offers a 4 x 4 x 4 metre concrete cube faced with a 50mm steel plate for use as an 'unyielding' drop target.

General Engineering Laboratory

Multi-Purpose Engineering Laboratory (inc. Strong Floor)

Our Engineering Laboratory houses a range of test equipment including: 50t/150t/250t universal test machines; a Rosand impact machine, and a strong floor.

This equipment is suitable for benchmarking materials and for small component testing.
