Business Assurance

HSE is committed to providing a quality service to all our customers taking due regard of environmental issues and a safe and healthy working environment for all our staff. We strive to meet customers' requirements by supplying services that are undertaken to the highest professional standards, represent value for money and are delivered on time.

In addition to audits by various external bodies, HSE has an internal audit programme, carried out on a six-monthly basis by qualified internal auditors, covering the Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental management systems.

Quality Management

HSE's Science Division operates under a quality management system that is certified by BSI Assurance (BSI) as complying with the ISO 9001:2015 standard. It covers all of our scientific activities and project management, from planning through to delivery, reporting and post-project evaluation.

In addition, a number of our tests are UKAS accredited to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (Testing Laboratories 0665 and 1751) and ISO/IEC 17065:2012 (Certification Body 7645).

Our AIMS Proficiency Testing scheme is UKAS accredited to ISO/IEC 17043:2010 (Proficiency Testing Provider 5254) allowing participating laboratories to demonstrate to their customers a complete commitment to quality.

Health and Safety

HSE aims to set and maintain exemplary standards of health and safety performance so as to ensure the wellbeing of staff and others who may work at or visit our premises. We recognise the importance of organisational culture in this and - in common with many other organisations - use the HSE Safety Climate Tool as part of a process of continuous improvement. Our comprehensive health and safety management system is certified by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) to ISO 45001:2018.

Environment

We fully accept the need to protect the environment, and make environmental considerations an integral part of our business activities. Our environmental management system covers all of our activities and follows the principles of ISO 14001.

Project Management

We have an established track record of successful project management and are committed to delivering projects to the highest standards of safety and quality as well as to time and cost. We have a comprehensive project management system in place, aligned to the Association for Project Management standard. Our Programme Management Unit supports project teams and leads a programme of continuous improvement.

Quality Assurance Proficiency Schemes

HSE's Science Division maintains a consistently high performance in a range of national and international quality assurance schemes and European-wide quality initiatives.

We also organise and manage a number of proficiency testing schemes in occupational and environmental areas.

Ethical Statement

High quality science is at the core of our business and we believe that the best science must be ethically sound. Therefore, to ensure our outputs, services and advice are trusted and dependable, we have taken steps to operate to the highest possible ethical standards of behaviour and conduct throughout all facets of the work we do whilst meeting all legal requirements.

Our activities are guided by the Civil Service Code and the principles within the Universal Ethical Code for Scientists. We abide by the UK Research Integrity Office Code of Practice and the International Code of Ethics for Occupational Health Professionals and, where it is appropriate for its research, obtain ethical review from a recognised research ethics committee. Our research is subject to rigorous audit and review allowing adaptation to the needs and demands of our customers whilst maintaining our scientific reputation.
