HSE Annual Science Review 2024
Hear from HSE's scientists and engineers as they present 5
minute 'Turbo Talks' on their work featured in this year's Annual
Science Review which illustrates how HSE uses science and evidence
to protect people and places, helping everyone lead safer and
healthier lives. This year's focus was on the role played by
scientists and engineers in delivering forensic incident
investigation activities and providing expert evidence used by
courts to secure justice. This includes:
- Use of visual imaging techniques to support HSE incident
investigations
- Sharing knowledge on investigating incidents through
training
- Population density analysis for CO2 pipeline routeing
- Evaluation of exposure controls used in electrolytic nickel
plating
- Monitoring the health of registered pesticide workers:10 years
of the PIPAH* study
- Putting residents at the heart of the new Building Safety
Regulator

minute 'Turbo Talks' on their work featured in this year's Annual
Science Review which illustrates how HSE uses science and evidence
to protect people and places, helping everyone lead safer and
healthier lives. This includes:
- Enabling safe deployment of lithium-ion batteries for storage
and use of net zero energy
- Developing the evidence base to underpin the safety of hydrogen
vehicles in tunnels: HyTunnel-CS
- The PROTECT COVID-19 National Core Study research, legacy,
preparedness
- Modern decontamination interventions may help to control
SARS-CoV-2 transmission
- Protecting angle grinder users from ill health caused by noise
and vibration
- Authorisation of first UK application of a pesticide using a
drone
- The robust scientific evidence that underpins HSE's regulatory
activities

HSE's Annual Science Review 2022
Watch HSE's seminar on the 2022 Annual Science Review. A human cough
simulator to test face shield protection, reducing the risk of
COVID-19 to delivery drivers, gas explosion tests in a life size
replica house, some of the studies HSE scientists have completed in
the last 12 months, hear our scientists talk about their work in
this seminar based on HSE's Annual Science Review. HSE's 2022
Annual Science Review uses real life work cases, and focuses on the
science and evidence being used to protect people and places,
helping everyone lead safer and healthier lives.

HSE's Annual Science Review 2021
HSE has published this year's review, 'COVID-19: Collaboration
in a time of crisis'.
Watch HSE's seminar on the 2021 Annual Science Review 'COVID-19: hear
some of our scientists and engineers introduce the work they do to
support HSE, wider government and industry in keeping people and
work environments healthy and safe. This includes: work by our PPE
(Personal Protective Equipment) Technical Team in support of the
COVID-19 pandemic response; work enabling the safe introduction of
'Net Zero' energy technologies which supports the UK target to
achieve net zero emissions; and the evidence supporting an
award winning HSE campaign that reduced the risk of Legionnaires'
disease outbreaks.
