Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) Assessment
13 July 2023
Introduction
This course will equip you with the knowledge to help recognise,
assess and reduce musculoskeletal disorder (manual handling and
upper limbs disorder) risks in your organisation. Prevention and
control of work-related MSDs is a major priority and as such HSE
have published a suite of three simple, but effective risk
assessment methods called:
- the Manual Handling Assessment Charts (MAC tool - for lifting,
carrying and team handling tasks)
- the Risk Assessment for Pushing and Pulling (RAPP tool - for
pushing and pulling tasks)
- the Assessment or Repetitive Tasks (ART tool - for upper limb
disorders)
They are designed to help you understand, interpret and
categorise the level of risk of the various known ergonomic risk
factors associated with manual tasks.
The course will cover:
- Principles of MSDs
- Understanding injuries
- Common types of injuries
- Legal aspects
- Key risk factors
- MAC, ART and RAPP Tools - using case studies to master the
tools in the classroom
- Key principles of good techniques
- Control and reduction of risk
This course is designed for employers and employee
representatives who intend to begin the process of MSD risk
assessment and control within their companies. It will also benefit
those already involved in MSD risk reduction who require more
formal or in-depth training on the HSE assessment methods. By
covering just the key methods of assessment (and not the legal
framework or wider risk management approaches) delegates will be
able to cover all the risk assessment approaches in a single day.
Risk assessment is the cornerstone of risk management, so
successful delegates will be enabled to support risk management in
the key areas of ergonomics through the provision of accurate risk
assessment and approaches to risk reduction.
