Hydrogen – Managing an Incident

20 February 2025

This in-person workshop developed in collaboration between HSE and Ricardo provides fundamental knowledge on how to manage incidents involving hydrogen.

Introduction

As the use of hydrogen as a low carbon energy vector increases, so does the potential for an unintended incident.

The consequences of hydrogen emergencies can be catastrophic, therefore producers, transporters, end users and first responders all need to understand how to work with hydrogen safely, as well as proactively plan for incidents involving hydrogen , so that individuals, teams and organisations know what to do should an incident occur.

This one-day, in-person workshop has been developed by Ricardo and HSE and is designed to help delegates understand the risks associated with hydrogen, the hazards created by an incident and build competence in proactive emergency planning should an incident involving hydrogen occur.

Learning outcomes

Delegates will be provided with information that will help them to:

  • Learn about the properties, risks and hazards of hydrogen;
  • Understand how hydrogen impacts the response to an incident;
  • Build competence in managing incidents involving hydrogen;
  • Protect people and minimise damage to assets and the environment in the event of an incident;
  • Reduce the reputational damage to the hydrogen industry.

What the course will cover

The workshop includes leading research and key policy knowledge from HSE along with case studies from experts at Ricardo that combine more than 150 years of automotive engineering with global chemical incident response experience. The workshop includes simulation exercises to support delegates to manage hydrogen incidents, covering areas including:

•    Personal protective equipment options and use during an incident;
•    Appropriate remediation equipment and tactics for gaseous and liquid hydrogen;
•    Response tactics and emergency services' collaboration;
•    Incident scene management.

Who should attend?

This course is intended for engineers, safety teams, fire wardens and incident response teams as well as senior management and QHSE officers. Through scenarios and simulations, the training will put delegates in the heart of an incident and develop their learning in real-life situations and the challenges they will need to overcome.

The underlying principle behind the workshop is to build competence in a safe environment, so that delegates know and understand where and how they can act when the risk and hazards will be significantly higher.
