Michael Brown
Senior Materials Engineer
Michael is a Senior Materials Engineer in the Engineering
Materials Team. Prior to working at HSE, Michael completed his
doctoral research at the University of Manchester, where he studied
the performance of engineering materials in hydrogen
environments.
Since joining HSE he has worked on numerous projects
characterising the effect of gaseous hydrogen on the mechanical
properties of gas network components. His responsibilities also
include failure analysis and incident investigation support.
Research Interests
- Effect of hydrogen on mechanical properties of engineering
materials
- Decarbonisation of UK gas networks
- Specialist in corrosion assessment and general consultancy on
materials characterisation and performance
Previous Projects
- HyDeploy - The regulatory assessment of a safety case to use
Winlaton for a trial of a blend of 20% H2 in NG in the natural gas
distribution system
- H21 - Understanding and demonstrating the feasibility of
conversion of the UK natural gas distribution system to 100%
hydrogen (NGN)
- Hy4Heat - providing safety evidence to demonstrate whether
hydrogen can be used for heat in buildings
- H100 - Excess flow valve testing for novel devices on
predominantly hydrogen distribution system (SGN)
- HSE incident investigations relating to engineering
materials
Notable Achievements
- Currently applying for chartered status with the Institute of
Materials, Minerals and Mining
